Turkish Travertine: Types, Finishes and Applications
Turkish travertine is supplied in ivory, beige, silver and noce tones, cut vein-cut or cross-cut and finished honed, polished, brushed or tumbled.
Travertine is a sedimentary stone formed by mineral deposition. Turkey is one of the main sources of commercially quarried travertine, and it is produced in a consistent range of light colour groups that suit large architectural surfaces.
Colour groups
- Classic light / ivory — the most widely specified group.
- Beige — warmer, slightly stronger tone.
- Silver — grey with pronounced linear banding.
- Noce — darker brown tones.
Vein-cut and cross-cut
Vein-cut material is sawn parallel to the bedding and shows straight linear banding, which is often used for vertical cladding. Cross-cut material is sawn across the bedding and shows a cloudier, more open figure, commonly used for flooring.
Filled and unfilled
Travertine contains natural pores. Filled material has the pores grouted before finishing, producing a closed surface suitable for interior floors. Unfilled material keeps the open texture and is generally used externally or for a more textured appearance.
